When the church was built the surrounding ground was flat and underneath was brown coal. In this area there are a great many huge holes that were excavated to get at the lignite. Whole villages were (and still are being) removed. The holes are slowly being allowed to fill with water and a lake landscape with all the recreation possibilities is being created.
This is in Beucha a few kilometers from Leipzig.
Wow, but it creates an interesting landscape, is the church now called 'church at the lake'?
ReplyDeleteIncredible. Hopefully, it will not become an island.
ReplyDeleteStriking photo and fascinating commentary. Whole villages?
